Japan Satellite Systems Inc. (JSAT) of Tokyo has contracted for a fifth communications satellite from Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc. The satellite, which is known as JCSAT, is an HS 601 body-stabilized model carrying 32 Ku-band transponders. It will carry voice, data and television signals among Japan, Asia and Hawaii. The satellite is scheduled for launch in December 1997.
